Due to lack of wind on June 25th, a small group of organizers, participants and volunteers organized a Round around the island of Texel on June 26 !
The wind was perfect that day between 11-20 knots and the sun was shining. After the skippers meeting , a good breakfast and a double-check of my gear the Round around Texel was a go !!
All participants had to take water, distress flare , extra rope and a GPS-tracker. Safety first of course for this race.
The Round around Texel is approximately 100 km and the record was set just over 2 Hours.
At 10.50 27 sailors started to go for this long-distance adventure .
I had a great start and could round the North of the island in 3rd position. (my GPS-number was 20 )
On the east-side of the island it got very tricky and tactical due to the wind dropping, the tide and the strong current. It was in 2008 that I last sailed on a Formula board, and was very happy I could borrow one from Twan Verseput as on my slalom-board the conditions were unsuitable. I used the Reflex7 9.2 and was at times underpowered and than again overpowered.
Dennis Little who was in first position after rounding Texel 3/4 was far ahead of me and I had difficulties to find the right course. But arriving on the South-part I was able to catch up with him and together we were heading towards the finish at Paal 9.
With only 1 minute difference between Dennis and myself I won the race and was totally happy with my performance.
I rounded the island in 2 Hrs 31 minutes, 2nd Dennis Little (2.32) and 3rd Adriaan van Rijsselberghe (2.42)
Only 17 out of the 27 participants made it to the finish. Last year I participated also but the outhaul-line broke and got “rescued” from the water some 45 minutes before the finish-line. A good comeback.
Not only winner of the Round around Texel but also the titel Dutch Champion Marathon Windsurfing.
A good feeling and I’m super happy !!
Thanks to all the organizers, family van Rijsselberghe, all volunteers and not to forget my parents who flew over from Bonaire. Also family/friends living in the Netherlands took the time to come to Texel to watch the race.
We all had a good time. The trophy is back on Bonaire at this time, but I will make sure to have it back on Texel next year and if the schedules allows I for sure will participate again !!
