PWA Super Grandslam Sylt, Germany Sept. 24th – Oct 4th, 2015

After a relaxing week in Klittmoller, Denmark where we rented a house to stay warm, have a real bathroom , a washing machine and could train for the last PWA-event of 2015 we drove to Blavand, (also in Denmark). There we met Hugo de Sousa and Loick Spicher and had a great session on the water. On september 22nd we arrived in Sylt and found a great spot on the Brandenburgerplatz, right beside the equipment-tent and the eventsite.
It was windy and we used the 2 days to get used to the conditions.

On the 25th, registration took place and the wind was gone.

LSD-fin with my logo, how cool is that !!

sylt22Luckily the weather was friendly and we could hang out and check the wind-guru predictions regulary. At the opening ceremony I had the honor to be the flag-bearer for Team Bonaire.

sylt21Monday the 28th the wind picked up a little in the afternoon and a slalom-round was raced. I missed out to advance into the quarterfinals by becoming fifth only a few meters behind the nessecary 4th place. i used the Slalom 78 (123L) And the Severne Reflex6 8.6 and 34cm fin.

Always fun with the slalom-crew. (L-R) Ethan Westera (ARU), Taty Frans (BON), Ben van der Steen (NED) and myself

The forecast looked really light for the days ahead so other races were organised, such as tow-in and SUP-sessions. I participated in all to stay active.

Great fun was the team SUP-race. 6 groups of each 6 participants on a huge SUP-board. It was big fun and good for Team-building.

It was a great moment to see my parents again here on Sylt after 4 months away from Bonaire. Also my aunt Pascale and uncle Paul took the time to visit Sylt again. Thanks a lot for all your support, advice and always on standby to help wherever needed.

I could qualify for the Philips Tow in nightsession and it was a great show. Lights were placed on each sail and the beach was fully packed with spectators. The sea was rough and we had quite difficult comditions in the dark but we all managed to give a great show. The winner was Taty Frans NB9

On saturday, the penultimate day of the event, we still had no wind and the tow in super session was held . The qualification rounds were earlier and the best 12 out of 24 competitiors gave a spectacular show. The conditions were perfect for tow in. Flat water and some good waves were the best ingredients for all riders to do some crazy air moves. Everybody had 2 runs. After the first run, Julien Mas, Gollito Estredo and myself recieved the highest scores possible (30 points)

IMG_0053IMG_0055A super final was a must and I could land the first ever double air culo in a tow in competition and won. I had some troubles to pop the champagne on the podium but it was a great moment

3rd. Julien Mas, 2nd. Gollito Estredo

Team I Love Bonaire

The last day of the event was again sunny, warm and windless and the new PWA Freestyle champion was crowned. Dieter van der Eijken B35 .
Kiri Thode became second and myself in 3rd. The first time for me on the overall stage and super happy with this result for the season 2015.

Bonaire twice on the podium PWA Freestyle !!

The PWA season may be over but I still have 2 more EFPT events on the agenda and a trip to Brasil before going home on December 5th !!
