IFCA Grandprix, Surf Worldcup Neusiedler See, Austria – April 28 – May 7
After arriving from a long flight out of Maui via Los Angeles in Amsterdam on April 26th, it was doing some quick laundry and packing up the van. A few hours of sleep and on to the next 1100 km. Destination Neusiedl am See for the IFCA/ EFPT Grandprix Surf Worldcup.
Totally happy with my new home on wheels
I registered myself for all 4 disciplines
· Slalom · Foiling · Freestyle · Tow in
Day -1- April 28th
After registration the wind was perfect for foiling and we could race 2 heats.
On the brand new JP Hydrofoil 135, Severne Reflex 8/ 7.8 and the Lokefoil I managed to win both heats. Although only 5 competitors entered the foil race it felt super to see that my training on Bonaire with the foil paid of.
Day -2- April 29th
The day started with a 7.30 skippersmeeting as the windguru promised us some slalom conditions in the early morning hours.
The wind picked up, we tried to start the slalom heats but had to switch back to foiling as it wasn’t enough for a good race. A third bullet in foil-heat number 3.
Day -3- April 30st
After a long day waiting for wind a freestyle-tow in show was organised for the many spectators on the beach. It was than that I threw the first ever Tow in Double Air Culo.(a video-clip on my Facebook-page)
The sun was out, the music and audience was great and this all made up for the non-windy day.
Autograph-session for the fans !!
Day -4- May 1st
It was a windy morning and we finally could start the slalom-competition. Unfortunately things got mixed up at the finishline due to confusion about the flag on the committee boat. Myself and 4 other competitiors got the signal wrong and did not finish the first elimination. A bummer, but I could make it up in the 2nd elimination with a solid 5th place.
The wind got gusty later on in the day and I do not know how many restarts we did in Elimination 3, but most important was that we could get a result and I made it again into the A-final and ended the slalom competition in a 6th place. It could have been more, but a very good wake-up call and warming up for Japan next week.
Results : FOILING
2017 IFCA AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX FOILING CHAMPION
Results : SLALOM
Myself ended in a good 6th place and my JP-Australia-collegue Steven van Broeckhoven in 7th.
Day 7 May – 4th
After 2 days of rest and catching up with my fellow Islandboy Tonky Frans and my grandpa Wim, the registration for the EFPT Freestyle was completed. 27 competitors out of 12 nations. Unfortunately the wind did not show up on the first freestyle-day and the qualifications for the Chiemsee Tow-in competition were made.
Day 8 – May 5th
I was scheduled in the 1st qualification round and wanted to push the limit with a double rotation. I went up high but my foot came out of the footstrap and lost my equipment.
Good work of the camera-man to catch that right moment on camera.
I did not make it into the final but it was fun doing and seeing that also the level without wind is getting higher and more radical.
Day 8 – May 6th
The sun was out and the beach was crowded, Today the second qualification and the final was scheduled. A huge congrats to JP-rider Sam Esteve from France winning the Tow-in with an incredible move.
Day 9 – May 7th
With a windy forecast predicted on windguru the skippersmeeting was held at 10 am and the first green flag went up at 1.15 pm.
I could sail my way up to the final via Ruyssenaars NED66, Lachauer G171, Testa ITA261 and in the final against my JP-Australia teammate Yentel Caers B16.
The wind was tricky at times but we all could excute some good moves in the 10 minutes heats. See comments on final from EFPT
Results : In 3rd Jacopo Testa, in 2nd Yentel Caers and myself in 1st place !
