Forsa is a method that stimulates the WE feeling, which stands for working together, positivity, trusting yourself and each other and taking responsibility. Together is the magic word.
Together with the youngsters of Bonaire (every day 100 schoolchildren visited the event-venue to participate in the active side-event), together with pro-riders, the ministry of VWS (Health and Sports), business partners, other organizations, the press, photographers. Together with foundations, schools, ForsaPWA committee, volunteers and the audience. Everyone took part and guaranteed the succes of Forsa PWA Worldcup event on Bonaire. FORSA-method by Mick Schmit
On April 9th the winterbreak was officially over with the first stop of the Professional World Tour here on our island. Although I knew already for months that the Forsa Committee was working very hard to make this event happen on Bonaire I could jump for joy when Nancy ( 1 of the organizers and my mom) told me in January the PWA Freestyle would return to Bonaire after 5 years.
I’ve been training hard over the winter in Cape Town and of course on Bonaire. Together with my coach and trainer Alison Maria from The Voyage of Succes we focused on losing weight but not the strength and muscles. A strict diet prepared by Maria , dedication in the gym and focus on the season…..to be ready !!
Lot’s of riders already came early to train and it was great to see them all on my homespot at Sorobon.
On April 9th the registration took place and 32 men and 10 women would compete until April 13th @ Sorobon. The first green flag went up at 12.33 and the event was ON !! I had to sail heat 2b against the youngest but very talented sailor Lennart Neubauer, all went ok and advanced.
At night in town at Islander a International Flagparade was held with the FORSA-kids and the National Anthem of Bonaire was played. It was impressive. Several speeches and words of welcome by the Forsa Committee , Curvin George on behalf of Ministry of Health and Sports and Rich Page of the PWA.
On day 2 I had the feeling the season was over already . My next opponent was Youp Schmit who was sailing extremely well and could take advantage of the lighter wind conditions. I could not get my moves right and he deserved to win and he raced through the remainder of the single elimination to place himself in a well deserved 1st place.
Normally one can fight back in the double elimination, but as friend and my biggest opponent over the past years Gollito Estredo also was out early in the single we met in the 2nd round already. I had the feeling I had to sail a title-race. Luckily we had a lay day due to light wind conditions on Day-3 to focus, rest and prepare. At the end of Day -3 only a few ladies-heats were raced.
Day 4 was D-day. Luckily head-judge Duncan Coombs decided to wait for the afternoon for the wind to pick up, and have the perfect conditions on Bonaire.
At 16.21 it was all or nothing. Gollito Estredo V-10, good friend and reigning 9x World Champion and myself. Whoever lost this heat was out of the running for the world title in 2019. So big or home….and the latter was not where I’ve been training for all winter. Especially not for this event at my homespot.
Live-ticker comments :
16:21 Massive heat coming up next with reigning world champion Gollito Estredo vs title hopeful Amado Vrieswijk. However, whoever loses this next heat is more than likely out of the running for this year’s title.
*** 16:29 Heat 26a now sailing – Gollito Estredo (Fanatic / Duotone) vs Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) *** 16:30 Vrieswijk opens with a big kabikuchi and Gollito an air funnel-funnel. Vrieswijk with a massive kono. Gollito also lands a kono, but worse than Vrieswijk’s. *** 16:31 Vrieswijk with an air bob-culo-spock – flying start from the local boy. That was right in front of Gollito, who replies with a double culo and a flaka-one-handed-shaka-360. Vrieswijk with aponch and an air funnel into burner, little bit wet on the landing. Gollito lands a skopu in the meantime.***16:33 Flaka-shaka-720 by Vrieswijk – big cheers from the crowd and a dab from Vrieswijk to respond. Nice kabikuchi by Gollito on the outside! Gollito down when looking for a double culo. Vrieswijk sees that and lands a perfect double culo right in front of Gollito.***16:35 Air funnel-burner by Vrieswijk and a slightly shuvit spock into culo by Gollito – advantage Vrieswijk at the moment. Gollito lands a spock into double culo, but super wet. Vrieswijk tries a flaka into bob or culo, but goes down. *** 16:36 Gollito pulls off a shaka into ponch – wet landing! Just a shaka for Vrieswijk when probably looking to copy Gollito. 16:37 Vrieswijk pulls off the flaka-bob – celebrates sailing out of that one and the home crowd loved it they are obviously rooting for him. *** 16:38 Vrieswijk pumped up as he lands an almost perfect flaka into ponch – dabs on the way out of that one too! End of Heat!
***16:39 Result Heat 26a – Amado Vrieswijk wins a massive heat against Gollito Estredo!
I think this was one of the most important heats to win up till now in my career and I was over the moon as Gollito is very hard to beat. We’re still good friends and I’m sure he will be ready for a next battle later this season.
Feeling that good the remainder of the day I sailed against :
Sam Esteve F-79 and Adrien Bosson F296 ( 2018 Vice-Worldchampion)
Against Bosson I could set the highest score ever since 2016 with 188 points. Soon after this heat and exciting afternoon the end of Day 4 was called and I felt relieved and lot’s of adrenaline to continue to the very end of the double elimination. After dinner at Islander in Kralendijk it was off to sleep and get ready for already the last day of this great event.
On Day 5 At 8.29 the women started their heats and at 8.44 my heat was on against Anthony Runes F85 and after that Giovanni Passini ITA-139
Yentel Caers B-16 for a spot on at least the podium, but as they say, my beast-mode was on and wanted more.
To built up the pressure and have a nice packed beach all finals for place 3-2 and 1st for both man and women were postponed until the afternoon. That was a great idea as the beach was packed at 14.55 for the start of the finals !!
I had to beat Julien Mas for 2nd place
Happy I’ve reached the final I was eager to beat Youp twice in a Super Final (in the double-elimination No.2 has to beat the winner of the single-elimination twice to overtake the position) and win the event om my home-spot. Beast-mode in the 6th gear and went for it.
The first final went awesome. I was pumped up and won….
In the Super final, Youp although he lost his fin in the shallow parts was sailing very strong and I had to give it all.
A dream came true when I heart the result on the beach.
